Technology Showcase 2019
“We need technology in every classroom and in every student and teacher’s hand, because it is the pen and paper of our time, and it is the lens through which we experience much of our world.” - David Warlick
Throughout the 2018-2019 school year, Oakview Middle School students utilized a variety of technology. Please enjoy the videos, photos, and descriptions of some of the content that students created this year!
GooseChase Interactive Scavenger Hunt
Library Orientation became an interactive experience due to the use of Goosechase. Goosechase EDU is an scavenger hunt for the 21st century. User created missions allow teachers to customize the experience that their students receive.
6th grade Life Management classes used Goosechase to introduce 6th grade to their new building. Below are some of the challenges they completed.
Book Reviews/Tracking
To help teachers view students reading progression throughout school year, we brought in technology. Goodreads and Biblionasium were just the tools we needed! Students successfully setup accounts and have been using these resources throughout the entire school year.

Non-Fiction Picture Books
Using Book Creator, 6th grade students made their non-fiction social activism books into picture e-books. The students did research, collaborated in real time, created rough drafts, utilized text features, and ultimately produced a non-fiction e-book.
Flipgrid
Students used Flipgrid, a video capturing tool, to create 8th grade introductions. Video allowed students to share their voice in an authentic way.
In 6th grade grade, students would record their daily assignments to help their fellow students who were absent. Students could then log into Flipgrid and understand the expectations before they returned to class the next day.

Pro/Con Speeches
Upon completion of an argumentative opinion writing piece, 8th grade shared their voices. Using Flipgrid and Padlet as resources, students recorded themselves reading their pieces. In the end, other students were able to listen and make comments.
Hour of Code
Hour of Code was a week long event, that took place December 3 through December 9. Students came in during their lunch to explore, code, and learn about programming. Ozobots, Osmo, Spheros, and a variety of apps were available for use. Students also earned a raffle ticket for the attending Hour of Code and a many won prizes at the end of the week.

Students were shown a book to movie trivia trailer and they entered for a chance to win prizes!
All throughout the month, students voted on our Author Bracket. We began with 16 authors and in the end, Rick Riordian was our school winner.
Finally, students created Flipgrid book reviews to share the great books they have been reading.
Curating Text Sets
Sixth grade students worked diligently on creating text sets to showcase their knowledge of non-fiction features.
Research
Visits to the Media Center were made even better with the use of technology in addition to our physical resources. Many classes utilized the library's resources to enhance their curriculum.
Podcasts
Eighth grade students gave their opinion regarding their fiction books through the use of podcasts. Planning and production helped the students to have very successful finished products!
Battle of the Books
Battle of the Books is a program that combines all three Lake Orion Middle Schools. Students from the schools create teams of 4-6 students and read and become experts on eight predetermined books. This event was redesigned this year to include the use of technology, using Nearpod. This interactive program allowed the Media Specialists to create and design the battle so that the teams could respond on their devices.
Nearpod was used to run this year's Battle of the Books. Groups of students were centered around a laptop that had Nearpod loaded and ready to go. When the battle began, students were asked multiple choice, true and false, and short answer questions the centered around the 7 books they had been studying for 3 months.
Oakview Middle School was home to the battle this year! Lots of planning, studying, reading, and practicing took place before Oakview teams took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place!
